Chaq - chat with your PDF manuals

Chaq is a technical prototype of a custom-trained Large Language Model (LLM), to test the feasibility of creating a mobile optimised chatbot that homeowners can use to troubleshoot their appliances (e.g. ovens, dishwashers)

By fine-tuning a GPT-3 model on existing PDF appliance manuals, we were able to create a simple chat interface for users to ask and answer questions.

Finding answers from a PDF manual, especially from a mobile phone, is a painful process. The Chaq prototype turned this on it’s head, generating factual and helpful answers to any question (in any language!) in seconds.

We demo’d the prototype to customer service teams at two leading appliance brands, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. However, the hugely fast pace of development around LLM training has meant there are now a lot of off-the-shelf tools that serve a similar purpose (although not specific to appliance PDF manuals). For that reason, we didn’t think developing Chaq into a full product would be worthwhile, but we are still enthusiastic about the ability for Large Language Models to solve this user-experience problem.
